Natural Childbirth: Should You Do It?

Natural childbirth can be challenging, painful, and extremely satisfying all at the same time. There’s a lot to think about. Natural childbirth has caught the interest of a rising number of my patients. Natural delivery is defined as giving birth with the least amount of medical assistance, such as anesthetic and pain medication. The majority of women do not choose this path.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly 60% of women who have a single baby, often known as a singleton, vaginally deliver with an epidural, the most frequent method of labor pain treatment. About 30% of women have their babies via C-section, with the remaining 10% having their babies without an epidural.

For most women, natural childbirth takes no longer than medically assisted childbirth. The majority of women have “low-risk” pregnancies, which means that natural delivery is a healthy option if they choose it. If you qualify, your OB-GYN will be able to tell you.

There are several considerations to consider for expectant mothers who desire to deliver their babies without the use of medications. As a doctor, I don’t generally recommend or discourage natural births unless there is compelling medical data to support one over the other. I simply attempt to offer all of the information in order to encourage women to make their own decisions since, in the end, the choice is yours!
